Along with the sights and sounds another major element of Calgary’s Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth is the smells and tasty treats of the Midway.
On May 8, Stampede Insiders were invited to an afternoon of sampling of the creative takes on classic Midway delicacies.
Highlighted foods at the gathering were Cheeseburger Ice Cream, Mexican Street Corn Ice Cream, Pickle Fry Poutine and Oreo Cheesecake Mini Donuts.
While classic Midway treats are a terrific way to take a break from the hustle and bustle while attending Stampede 1,300 vendors are challenged to produce something that stands out from the rest along the busy Midway.
One of those dishes came from Happy Fish catering with their new Cowboyaki which is a special spin on a popular Japanese street food Takoyaki.
Cowboyaki is a small ball of meat floss, seaweed strips, pickled ginger, cabbage, and large chunks of octopus.
Events & Operations Manager at Happy Fish Catering Ying Yan Situ shared the excitement of being highlighted, “Bringing our unique flavours to the Calgary Stampede is a highlight for us, and the community’s enthusiasm in naming one of our exclusive dishes for this year has made this experience even more special.”
Other twists on classic Midway foods include Cowboy Candy which is a Colossal Onion with candied jalapenos, hot cheese, bacon bits and chives, Sour Candy Soft Serve, Whipped Lemonade, a Watermelon Burger, and Pina Colada Boba Lemonade.
Many vendors at Stampede spend the entire year producing culinary wonders and according to Calgary Stampede Midway Manager Ashley Warner explains, “The Midway’s food vendors work all year to curate one-of-a-kind culinary creations that are exclusive to the Stampede. Make sure to bring your appetite because there is no shortage of options for every craving.”
Calgary Stampede will be kicking off on July 5 with the iconic Stampede Parade. Visitors can also try Indigenous staples like Bannock Burgers and Indian Tacos at the Elbow river camp which will be open for all 10 days of Stampede.
